Tournament Day Prep: What to Expect & How to Support the Team
Tournament day is one of the most exciting opportunities for our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu team to step outside of the academy and test themselves in a new environment. Whether it’s your first competition or you’ve competed before, the experience brings a different level of intensity, focus, and growth that’s hard to replicate in everyday training.
For Our Competitors
Preparation starts before you even step onto the mat. Make sure you’ve packed your essentials the night before—gi, belt, water, light snacks, and any recovery items you typically use. Arrive early, stay loose, and keep your mindset centered. Nerves are normal, but remember: this is an opportunity to learn, not a requirement to prove anything.
Brackets should be out early this week. Keep an eye on Smoothcomp for the time of your first match (https://smoothcomp.com/en/event/26341). I recommend arriving at the venue at least 1.5-2 hours before your start time to get through the gate, set up, warm up, and account for changes to start times. I’ll be there around 8am to save us a spot for home base.
Parents, about 45 minutes before your child’s start time, hand off your child to one of the coaches at the entrance of the competition area. A coach will help your child check in with the appropriate mat coordinator, warm up, wait for their matches, coach them through each match, and escort them back to you via the podium or competition area gate. For adult competitors, make your way to the warm up mats about 1 hour before your start time. A coach will be available ring side for your match.
It’s important to emphasize that tournaments do not factor into belt promotions and are never required. Progress in Jiu-Jitsu is built consistently on the mats during training. That said, competition offers a unique environment—higher stakes, unfamiliar opponents, and a surge of adrenaline—that can accelerate your understanding of timing, composure, and resilience. We strongly encourage everyone to experience it at least once.
As your coach, my expectations go beyond wins and losses. Sportsmanship and behavior are paramount. I expect every competitor to:
Give their best effort, regardless of the outcome
Carry themselves with respect toward opponents, referees, and other teams
Have a great time and embrace the experience
Make friends and connect with others in the community
Compete intelligently and prioritize safety to avoid injury
How you conduct yourself on and off the mat reflects not only your training, but our entire team.
For Friends, Family, and Teammates
Your presence makes a difference. We invite all friends and family to come out, support, and be part of the team atmosphere. Tournament days are long, and having a strong, supportive group creates energy that carries our competitors through their matches.
We’ll be setting up a small rollout mat as a home base for the team. This will be our gathering point throughout the day—a place to warm up, review techniques, stay focused, and connect between matches.
Feel free to bring:
Chairs for comfort during downtime
Picnic blankets to create a shared space
Snacks or light food to share if you’d like
The goal is to create a relaxed, communal environment where everyone—competitors and supporters alike—can come together and represent our values of sportsmanship and respect.
Building the Team Beyond the Academy
Tournament days aren’t just about matches. They’re about strengthening our community. Between bouts, we gather, we talk, we laugh, and we support one another. These shared experiences help build bonds that go beyond regular training sessions.
Whether you’re stepping onto the mat or cheering from the sidelines, you’re contributing to something bigger than any single match.
We look forward to seeing everyone there—ready to compete, ready to support, and ready to grow together.
